Wolverine: Revenge Review (Jonathan Hickman, Greg Capullo)

Magneto dies (again) creating an apocalyptic electro-magnetic pulse that wipes out all power on Earth, killing millions. With the remaining Brotherhood of Evil Mutants controlling the planet’s final reactor, Nick Fury rallies the surviving Avengers for a last ditch heist to secure it - and fails. With everyone dead at the hands of the Brotherhood, it’s down to Wolverine… to get Revenge!

X-Men: Wolverine/Gambit Review (Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale)

Gambit’s missing Rogue (something to do with a larger X-Men storyline happening around this time) and decides to distract himself by investigating the death of an ex in London - the latest victim of a Jack the Ripper copycat killer with a Wolverine silhouette. Couldn’t be Logan, could it? He does have blades in his hands and has a tendency to go off on one without really knowing what he’s doing. Nahhh. Anyhoo, Remy’s on the case, cher.

Wolverine: Infinity Watch Review (Gerry Duggan, Andy MacDonald)

The Infinity Stones have become fused to people thanks to Adam Warlock in the latest Infinity Wars book. One of them peeps is a Texas death row inmate who now finds himself pursued by the galaxy’s most dangerous power-hungry loonies (not Thanos for once)! It’s down to the unlikely pair of the freshly-resurrected Wolverine and the newly un-Sorcerer-Supremed Loki to protect poor Hector in Wolverine: Infinity Watch.

Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey Review (Matthew Rosenberg, Leinil Francis Yu)

Hold onto your hats everyone: Jean Grey is BACK?! But this character NEVER returns from the dead – that’s why she’s called Phoenix half the time! And it’s been years since we’ve seen Jean – why, I bet there’s an entire generation of comics readers who’ll be utterly lost as to who this “Gene Gray” person is!

Astonishing X-Men, Volume 7: Monstrous Review (Daniel Way, Jason Pearson)

So, as much as it might seem like I read, I actually read even more that I don’t bother to rate/review! Why not? Well, I’m conscious that a lot of what I post, while all 100% my honest opinions, tends to skew to the negative and I really don’t need to add to that with books that made zero impression on me!

Return of Wolverine Review (Charles Soule, Steve McNiven)

I didn’t think Return of Wolverine was going to be good – and it wasn’t; nothing Charles Soule writes these days is – but I was curious to see how they’d bring Wolverine back from the dead. I expected time travel to be the clichéd get out of jail free excuse and surprisingly it wasn’t, so props to Soule for that! What it turned out to be though, revealed at the end in a vague, nonsensical page from the villain of this story, was unsatisfying and dumb.

Wolverine: Snikt! by Tsutomu Nihei Review

It’s the non-Matrix Matrix world and humanity is nearly wiped out due to a mutant/robot species with one weakness: adamantium. You can see where this going! So they send someone back in time to get Wolverine to help them in the future, he snikts out his adamantium claws and saves the day.

Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Volume 7: Scarlet Samurai Review (Ed Brisson, Mike Deodato)

Like he does, Logan’s putzing about Japan waiting for the latest Marvel hack to give him something to do, when he stumbles into the midst of a gang war: the Silver Samurai’s manufacturing a new illegal drug, Regenix, that temporarily gives users a healing factor like Wolverine’s, and Gorgon wants control of the supply because of an ages-old feud between his people and the Samurai’s. Oh man, Logan’s in yet another shite comic!

All-New Wolverine, Volume 6: Old Woman Laura Review (Tom Taylor, Ramon Rosanas)

Old Man Logan was a nightmare future for Wolverine wherein he did something terrible in his past leading to a dystopian wasteland ruled by thugs before one last tragedy shocks him into a final attempt at redemption – it’s arguably the best Wolverine book.

All-New Wolverine, Volume 5: Orphans of X Review (Tom Taylor, Juann Cabal)

Lost a loved one to a Wolverine? Join the Orphans of X! The aim? To hunt down and kill all Wolverines using material gleaned from the magical Muramasa blade, that neutralises the Wolverines’ healing factors. 

So does they do it - nuh buh muh huh guh? Sorry, my brain shut down at the astoopidity of that question! The real question should be: is it at least a somewhat entertaining read before Laura and co. inevitably beat them? Eh, kinda… 

X-Men: Original Sin Review (Daniel Way, Mike Deodato)

To no-one’s surprise but his own (and only then for contrived dramatic purposes), Daken discovers that he’s Wolverine’s son. Apparently the bone claws and healing factor weren’t big enough clues! Some baddies kidnap Daken so Logan and Xavier set out to rescue him. 

Wolverine: Origins, Volume 4: Our War Review (Daniel Way, Steve Dillon)

Set in the wake of Captain America’s death after the first Civil War, Wolverine pours one out for his fallen comrade and flashes back to their first encounter in WW2 – when he was the one meant to kill Cap!?

Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Volume 3: The Last Ronin Review (Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino)

Old Man Logan works fine as a standalone book but as an ongoing title? Nope. And I think at this point Marvel should just stop because Jeff Lemire’s clearly run out of ideas. 

So the unmemorable story of Logan hunting down Lady Deathstrike takes him back to, of course, Japan where he has to fight some arbitrary warrior monks because what else is he gonna do? 

All-New Wolverine, Volume 3: Enemy of the State II Review (Tom Taylor, Nik Virella)

This is the second book in a row where the main title – “All-New Wolverine” – has been ironically undermined by the subtitle: Civil War II in the last book, Enemy of the State II in this; “All-New” my bum! It’d be nice if Marvel’s writers could come up with original storylines instead of relying on rehashing old classics but that’s just not Marvel’s (or DC’s for that matter) style – unimaginativeness is the watchword!

All-New Wolverine, Volume 2: Civil War II Review (Tom Taylor, Marcio Takara)

Tom Taylor does two things in this book that almost floored me out of sheer surprise: 1) he makes the Unbearable Squirrel Girl bearable and, 2) the mandatory crossover issues he had to include for Marvel’s latest event, Civil War II, not only didn’t feel intrusive but were the best part!

Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Volume 2: Bordertown Review (Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino)

Old Man Logan continues to be haunted by his demons in Bordertown. Believing his dystopian future might still happen, he heads to a small gravel quarry mining town in the Great White North to protect his future wife, Maureen, who’s presently a kid. But long-time enemies like Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers are surprised to discover Logan is seemingly back from the dead and set out to settle some old scores… 

Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Volume 1: Berzerker Review (Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino)

Just when I’d written off Jeff Lemire he comes out with a really good superhero comic - and of course it’d be for a fellow Canuck like Wolverine! 

Old Man Logan is the best Wolverine story bar none. Originally a standalone (and I know this is a DC term but it’s fitting) “Elseworlds”-type story by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven from 2008-09, the character and world was revisited in a Brian Bendis-written miniseries during last year’s Secret Wars and now it’s an ongoing. 

Wolverine: Japan's Most Wanted Review (Jason Latour, Paco Diaz)

Sabretooth’s taken control of the Hand, the most powerful Japanese ninja clan, and Wolverine’s killed one of its members posing as a politician. Now the authorities, along with the new Silver Samurai, are after Wolverine. Snikt ‘em all, bub-san!

The Arms of the Octopus Review (Mike Costa, Kris Anka)

If you were hoping for some kind of story referencing Doc Ock’s fate regarding the whole Superior Spider-Man storyline like I was, you won’t find that in The Arms of the Octopus. Instead it’s a weak irrelevant crossover between Superior Spider-Man, Indestructible Hulk and All-New X-Men wherein a time-displaced young Doc Ock appears in the present temporarily. But writer Mike Costa won’t even commit to too much Doc Ock in the main story, shunting him off to the side so we can focus on the far less interesting Dr (Hey) Jude!

Death of Wolverine: Wolverines, Volume 1: Dancing with the Devil Review (Charles Soule, Nick Bradshaw)

The Wolverines are: Mystique, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Daken and X-23. Together with Paradise (the team from The Weapon X Program book) their task is to find and retrieve Logan’s adamantium-encased body from Dr Cornelius’ abandoned facility. But, wuh-oh, naughty Mr Sinister steals it first! Now they gotta steal it back!
