Why Don't You Love Me? by Paul B. Rainey Review

Claire and Mark are locked in a loveless marriage along with two kids neither like, let alone love. Claire is clinically depressed, spending her days drinking wine on the couch in her bathrobe while Mark, also depressed but whose sick leave has expired, works a job he has no idea how to do. Then cracks start appearing as they begin to look at their situation. How did they ever become a couple? Why don’t they care about their children? Why does Mark think he works in another profession? All isn’t what it seems…

DC vs. Vampires, Volume 1 Review (James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg)

When I saw this title I thought it can’t just be DC characters fighting, and some inevitably becoming, vampires can it - there has to be more to this than that, otherwise why do it? Which is why I was willing to give DC vs Vampires the benefit of the doubt and picked it up.

Count Crowley, Volume 2: Amateur Midnight Monster Hunter Review (David Dastmalchian, Lukas Ketner)

It’s still the ‘80s, Jerri’s still Count Crowley, the local TV host of bad horror movies, and she’s still battling monsters and attending AA. This time she goes another round with the werewolf from the first book and also a vamp from the big city. Ooo…k.

Love Everlasting, Volume 1 Review (Tom King, Elsa Charretier)

Joan Peterson is a 1950s secretary, she’s a 1960s hippie, she’s a 19th century frontier rancher, she’s a 1920s maid, a WW1 cabaret singer, and she loves George, she loves Roger, she loves Dane, Tony, Don, and Frank - but something’s not right here. And as Joan suspects her very reality is an ever-changing cliched construct, the Cowboy is there to put her doubts to bloody rest. Because love? It’s everlasting, baby.

Atomic Habits by James Clear Review

Atomic Habits is about the importance of small changes (like atoms) leading to big changes rather than anything nuclear-related. It’s also not really an original work. James Clear (a name designed for puns I’ll try to steer… away… from) makes it… transparent… that his book is more of an aggregator of past advice/books. That’s probably why it’s so underwhelming, at least for someone who’s read similar books, because the material isn’t new and feels repetitive.

In Invisible Wounds: Graphic Journalism, cartoonist Jess Ruliffson transcribes/illustrates the real-life stories of 12 US military veterans and their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, their time in the military, the effect on their lives, for better or worse (mostly the latter), and the transition from military to civilian life.

Children of the New World by Alexander Weinstein Review

A robot companion “dies” leaving his family to deal with the surprisingly painful loss. A company creates fake memories to be implanted in its customers. Spiritual enlightenment is bought and sold Matrix-style, by plugging into them. A dark society sends children into space to die for seemingly no reason. People struggle to survive in a new Ice Age. And reincarnation is made real so that nobody dies - even those who want to…
