All-New Wolverine, Volume 6: Old Woman Laura Review (Tom Taylor, Ramon Rosanas)

Old Man Logan was a nightmare future for Wolverine wherein he did something terrible in his past leading to a dystopian wasteland ruled by thugs before one last tragedy shocks him into a final attempt at redemption – it’s arguably the best Wolverine book.

Old Woman Laura isn’t an unimaginative gender swap of the same storyline so much as it is false advertising. Laura didn’t do anything terrible and the future world she lives in isn’t a wasteland – in fact it’s the opposite; it’s a utopia! Maybe writer Tom Taylor wants to claim that he wasn’t going for a gender-swap version of Old Man Logan but with a title like Old Woman Laura, you’re kind of inviting the comparison.

Worst of all, it’s not entertaining. Old Man Logan was gripping from start to finish; Old Woman Laura is a yawner all the way through. She’s dying so she wants to snuff out the last pocket of “evil” in the world: Doom’s Latveria (kind of framing it like Asterix’s Gaulish village holding out against Caesar’s Roman invaders – hmm, is Doom the underdog hero like Asterix or the Star Wars Rebels…?). Guess if she succeeds?

Predictable, boring, with a cop-out ending and “deaths” that don’t matter because this is some nebulous far-flung future world that could easily be brushed off as an alternate timeline – Old Woman Laura is a load of bollocks. Ramon Rosanas’ art looks very pretty though – dude keeps getting better!

There are a couple disposable issues also included. One where Laura and some girl literally kick a Nazi, that couldn’t have been more dull, and a kerazy silly story where Gabby, Jonathan (her pet wolverine) and Deadpool team up to exact vengeance on the animal testing facility Jonathan was rescued from. It’s so OTT cartoony and nonsensical but it had a couple moments that made me laugh like the zombie sloth and the panel where Deadpool’s making zombie squirrel kebabs!

All-New Wolverine, Volume 6: Old Woman Laura is an uninspired and unmemorable addition to a very bleh series.

(By the way, if you want a laugh, type in “Old Woman Laura” into the GR search box and see what the second result is – NSFW!)
