House of X #2 Review (Jonathan Hickman, Pepe Larraz)

Moira MacTaggert’s mutant power is reincarnation – except she remembers every past life each time she respawns! This is the story of her many lives and what she learned in them.

House of X #2 is pretty underwhelming. Not that Moira’s story is entirely boring – the timeline where she encounters Destiny and Mystique was interesting – but a lot of the scenes were very ordinary (Moira learning things by trial and error), particularly for a series so heavily touted as this.

And I was disappointed that this entire issue was just backstory filling in the blanks to what we’ve already seen rather than progressing the story forward any. Like the scene in Powers of X #1 where Moira and Xavier meet on a bench is expanded further with a little bit of explanation of what House of X is.

Moira’s story does seem relevant to the larger one being told but I would’ve liked if we’d had some more on the other storylines, with Moira’s being edited down to fewer pages. I appreciate that Jonathan Hickman’s telling a complex story coherently, it’s just that this issue is a bit dull. Not to mention unsatisfying in not seeing anything else moving forward!

I liked Pepe Larraz’s art a lot – I’m finding more to admire about his visuals the more I see of it. Very simple things like a close up of an eye are extremely skilfully drawn and gave me pause when reading. His Apocalypse (who makes a brief cameo) is a bit too Thanos-y though.

House of X #2 is a birruva snoozer unfortunately. It’s still more setup, but hopefully that’ll make the payoff that much better – hopefully!
