Judge Dredd, Volume 2 Review (Duane Swierczynski, Nelson Daniel)

Droids is revoltin’ in Mega-City One – and they’re also turning against the human populace, yukyukyuk! That means Dredd’s outta his usual weaponry and he’s gotta save the life of a bestselling teen author from the rioting robots with just his mitts and wits. No Lawgiver. No Lawmaster. No problem. Also, clones for some reason?!

Ah, Judge Dredd – my teen idol! How I wish I could read an excellent Dredd comic but I seem shit out of luck in general when it comes to reading anything decent these days! So it goes with Duane Swierczynski’s second Dredd book featuring The Long Fail storyline.

Nothing that special happens in what amounts to a forgettable and mundane Dredd story. Neither Dredd nor the other judges ever feel like they’re in any danger. Tying it into the clones from the first book threw me a bit as it’s been yonks since I last read that one. And the whole thing unsatisfyingly closes out with a non-ending “to be continued” on the last page. Booooo – to the iso-cubes with ye!

Still, ol’ Duane hits me in the nostalgia nads pretty hard with all the bells and whistles of classic Dredd. The daffy block names (Urban-Garland Block), the hapless character in tow to the unstoppable Dredd, the many pop culture references in the background (Kundle e-books), and the silly character of the droid created in the image and personality of real-life crime writer James Crumley!

I likes checking in with Dredd every now and then but the chances of him appearing in a comic worth reading are unfortunately as rare as seeing him without his helmet!
