Hunter x Hunter, Volume 1: The Day of Departure by Yoshihiro Togashi Review

Hunters are the elite in Gon’s world - wealthy celebrities free to roam the Earth - so of course he wants to become one, like his long-lost pop. Off he goes to the trials – but will he blah blah of course he will eventually and find his dad and zzzzzzzzzzzz…

Hunter X Hunter Volume 1 sets up the series premise and the first obstacles Gon and his fellow wannabes have to overcome - and I couldn’t have cared less! This was all so uninteresting, I just couldn’t get excited about any of it. The characters are bland, the story is predictable and unengaging, none of the action was great – I’m baffled as to what fans see in this. The writing and art is plain whatevs.

The two choice quiz, some of the fantasy beasts and the beginning of the trials were momentarily less tedious blips than the rest of this snore-fest. The book isn’t incompetently put-together, it’s just not at all for me and there’s no way in hell I’m gonna keep on with this coma-rific comic!
