Business Cat: Hostile Takeovers by Tom Fonder Review

Business Cat is CEO of MiaoCo – until his fatal decision of handing over the company’s accounting to his favourite toy somehow backfires! Enter: Howard T. Business Pug who becomes the new boss. But what will Business Cat do without business?

Business Cat: Hostile Takeovers is Tom Fonder’s second collection of his internet gag strip and my first experience with his bonkers character. And… nah.

There’s definitely some funny strips here though: BC smacking paper as they come out the photocopier, walking across someone’s desk, making cute big cat eyes during a business negotiation to get his way, BC sitting on a fence screaming at night. It’s funny because cat-headed BC behaves like a cat but has a human body which accentuates the silliness of cats’ general behaviour – and, as any cat owner will attest, cats is silly billies!

A lot of the gags aren’t nearly as funny though and I’ve never really liked the stop-start rhythm of one-page strips – they don’t really read cohesively in a collection. Some of the jokes are repetitive too – BC knocking stuff over, breaking screens. They either get less funny on repeat or were never funny to begin with. The bonus panels collected at the end too was a really bad formatting idea. You have to flick back to each individual strip to understand the additional panel – why not just add it on to each strip in the first place??

I got some chuckles out of this Bojack-esque comic – BC taking a crap in the cat café, Business Pug lighting up at being called a good boy – but mostly Business Cat: Hostile Takeovers is kinda dull and one-note.
