Batman - One Bad Day: Catwoman Review (G. Willow Wilson, Jamie McKelvie)

A brooch belonging to Selina’s ma pawned for nothing years ago is now being sold at auction for a substantial sum. Selina plots to take back the family heirloom thus, in her eyes, righting the wrongs of the past - but she encounters an unexpected adversary on what will be for her One Bad Day.

I thought the One Bad Day series was only origin stories for Batman’s rogues gallery but this Catwoman entry is quite literally one bad day in the life of Selina Kyle, which is a clever take. I also like that it’s a present-day story that’s influenced by the past so that it has an element of an origin mixed in. Generally I liked the story even though it feels like an opening act without a follow-up which doesn’t make for the most satisfying read.

Jamie McKelvie is the star of the show whichever book he’s on and it’s no different here - I’ve always loved his art, and I love it on this too. Every character looks awesome, especially Batman (who even gets to have a bulge this time so he looks like a man and not a plastic action figure!), and the action is well laid out too so you can easily follow either a punch-up or Selina’s quick movements.

The Bat and the Cat are together again - sorta - and their romantic scene was sweet, where you get a strong sense of their complicated but real relationship. The overall message of the story - that the past sometimes belongs there and that today is what matters - is hardly original but doesn’t feel forced or overbearing either, and lends the story a subtle pathos.

I liked the mysterious new character of The Forger but it is very convenient how much of a match for Selina she is. I don’t think G. Willow Wilson is also writing the Catwoman title so it’s uncertain when we will find out why Forger is so much better than Catwoman, if ever, which makes her character that much more of a contrived foil.

The story as a whole feels like a solid opening act without anything subsequent to complete it so that it left me wanting. One Bad Day: Catwoman is slight but neither is it a bad Catwoman comic. Here’s hoping this creative team reunite one good day to tell the rest of Catwoman/Forger’s tale.
