Adventuregame Comics 2: The Beyond by Jason Shiga Review
Mario Rivera dies and ends up in the afterlife… which turns out to be a waiting room with a lot of magic books and a mysterious castle in the distance. What will Mario do next? You decide!
Jason Shiga’s back with a new choose-your-own-adventure comic, The Beyond - and it’s definitely my least favourite of the three he’s done.
There are two main storylines to experience: a Jane Austen-style romance and a generic pirate story and both are cliched and boring. The book also has a finickity game mechanic where you have to “combine” book numbers to progress which leads to a lot of tedious repetition.
The Beyond was a very unsatisfying and dull comic - not just Shiga’s worst puzzle comic but also the worst comic he’s done to date. Uninspired guff, if you’re in the market for a Jason Shiga choose-your-own-adventure comic, check out Meanwhile or Leviathan instead of this one.
