Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom Review (Brandon Easton, Fico Ossio)

Guys, did you know racism is bad? Well, in case you didn’t and needed a superhero comic to edumacate you, check out Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom aka the worst comic of 2022!

Spinning out of Future State, DC’s shorthand for “more instantly forgettable nonsense”, Scott Free is dead for reasons and Mister Miracle is a black guy named Shilo Norman, also for reasons - and it’s important to point out that Shilo’s black because that’s all this comic is about: the main character being black. Also, Scott and Barda had a daughter called N’Vir (“Never Free” geddit…) who is upset that Shilo has the Mister Miracle mantle so fights him. Brilliant motivation. I’m SO hooked, baby!

When you’re not being lectured about how racism still exists and that’s not good, and did you know Civil Rights was important and difficult, which is neither the least bit enlightening or original to say, and always tedious to read, you’re seeing the most cliched superhero rubbish play out. Superhero fights supervillain over and over until the book’s done - check. Superficial romance subplot - check.

Oh yeah, the original Mister Miracle, Thaddeus Brown, is retconned as black to make Brandon Easton’s terrible story work. Also, did you know that racism is bad and that it still exists? Now here’s some flashy nonsense to make it seem like you’re reading something entertaining! Easton’s trying to say something meaningful but he’s nowhere near talented enough to do it in a way that’s either compelling or clever - he just throws garbage at you and you’re meant to think “Hmm, identity and race, woah, so profound…!”

Can you tell I wasn’t impressed by any of this tripe? Mister Miserable: The Source of Boredom is easily the worst thing I’ve read so far this year. Don’t do it, guys - unless you’re not sure how to feel about racism and need to be told over and over. (Hint: duuuuh…)
