Batman: Killing Time #1 Review (Tom King, David Marquez)

Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin (all of whom happen to be in the new Batman movie out now), and Croc team up to steal a valuable item from a bank vault. But what is it? Batman’s on the case!

I was pleasantly surprised to see Tom King on a new Batman book seeing as his Bat/Cat maxiseries is shortly wrapping up - if DC have decided to give us a new King/Batman book every year via six issue minis, I’m up for that. I was a big fan of his Batman run and would like to see him maintaining his connection to the character in some form. That said, the first issue of Batman: Killing Time is an unimpressive one.

Most of it is a fairly ordinary bank heist, with all the rogues and Batman/Gordon playing their usual parts, which was quite boring to see. There’s a lot of time details for no reason besides the title, although I’m sure it all relates to the mysterious object that got nabbed, and the incongruous one-page flashback to Ancient Greece.

David Marquez’s art is the star - it looks very polished, dramatically grand and sleek; everything you’d expect to see in a top tier superhero comic. It’s nice to see Selina in her classic villain role again - she rarely is these days - and something unexpected happens to one of the rogues at the end.

Otherwise, there’s nowt much else noteworthy about this issue - it’s a pretty weak beginning unfortunately. Killing Time accurately describes the comic as that’s all you’re doing reading it. Not a very entertaining first issue, Batman: Killing Time is probably one most readers can easily take their time waiting to read in trade paperback.
