Swamp Thing: Green Hell #1 Review (Jeff Lemire, Doug Mahnke)

You know how Jeff Lemire never does comics set in a dystopian future? Wait… (thinks)

… Sweet Tooth, Trillium, Descender, Ass-ender, Futures End, Old Man Logan, Bloodshot Reborn, Sentient, Snow Angels, Primordial, Little Monsters, all that Black Hammer rubbish…

Ohhhh yeah. You know how all Jeff Lemire seems to do are comics set in a dystopian future? Well, you’ll never have thunk it but he dun anuvver won - it’s Swamp Thing: Green Dystopian Future!

It’s a dystopian future because this writer is staggeringly imaginative so most humans are dead and the remaining ones are living Waterworld-y lives. The Green decides to punish the remnants of humanity by unleashing an evil Swamp Thing so old man Constantine resurrects Alec Holland from somewhere to be the good Swamp Thing to fight evil Swamp Thing. Edge of my seat, I never knew ye whilst reading this pap!

Lotta gore in this one (DC Black Label, you’re so edgy dude…), lotta pointless gore for a pointless comic. I read it, I barely remember it, it’ll be but a fleeting memory tomorrow, and I’ll be blissfully unaware of it the day after that.

There’s apparently more to this series but I’ll never read it. I’m gonna bet that good Swamp Thing saves the dystopian future and makes it less dystopian - until the next series the wholly original Jeff Lemire gets his hands on and remakes it all dystopian again. That’s why nobody’s jaded with this creator, you never know what you’re gonna git with him.
