Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen's Boss Perry White #1 Review (Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber)

I picked up Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White sight-unseen, thinking it was going to be a one-shot follow-up to Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber’s excellent award-winning Jimmy Olsen maxi-series. And it is - partially (Fractionally?). Fraction/Lieber produce a new short story about how Metropolis saves Superman for a change, which is fine, but it’s only 7 pages!

The rest of the bumper issue is made up of reprints. There’s an extract from Fraction/Lieber’s Jimmy Olsen #1, two shorts from the 1970s, and two shorts from the 2010s.

One of the 1970s stories has Perry get superpowers temporarily that was amusing, and it’s nice to see the nostalgic Curt Swan art. The one by Neil Kleid/Dean Haspiel where Perry talks to Wildcat/Ted Grant in a bar was confusing - how old is Ted exactly? He was a full-grown man when he met Perry as a kid and he’s still somehow younger than Perry even though Perry’s an old man now?! Haspiel’s art is good though. The Brian Bendis/Ivan Reis piece is literally a 3 page extract and silent - very underwhelming.

It would’ve been great if the whole one-shot had been a Fraction/Lieber Perry White comic but unfortunately it’s made up of mostly forgettable bits and bobs featuring Perry. If you’ve not read it yet, I highly recommend Fraction/Lieber’s Jimmy Olsen book instead of this heavily-padded offering.
