Rick Grimes 2000 Review (Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley)

The dead were just the beginning - now it’s time for Rick Grimes and co. to take on an alien invasion!

Uh… ok.

So Robert Kirkman’s gone back to The Walking Dead world yet again (as we all know he’s going to keep doing for many more years to come) for this one-off tongue-in-cheek outing, Rick Grimes 2000. It’s basically a campy, knowing homage to ‘90s-style Image comics where all the characters are back but reimagined with robot suits and giant guns.

Rick’s dressed like a Yellow Lantern and wielding a lightsaber, Michonne’s tooled up in a mech-suit, Eugene has a Doc Ock-style rig, and so on. There isn’t really a story, just a lot of over-the-top action as the cast blammo their way through zombies and aliens in what I’m sure is meant to be fun but really isn’t. It’s a very short read but I was still done with it long before the end - nothing about this one-note book is imaginative or compelling.

Rick Grimes 2000 is a pointless fever dream of a comic that even the most ardent Walking Dead fans won’t be impressed with - don’t bother.
