Batman: The World Review (Brian Azzarello, Lee Bermejo)

The World is an anthology book of Batman short stories set in multiple countries, written/drawn by creators from those countries. And it’s pretty terrible!

Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo kick things off in ‘murica with Bruce giving a weird love soliloquy to Gotham City that he personifies as a woman/lover - ugh! Bermejo’s splash pages are excellent though.

Then we’re off around the world for what basically amounts to two kinds of story: one where Batman punches a bad guy and one which is a mash note to the character. Paco Roca is the one creator who broke that trend by producing a story of Bruce getting some R&R in Spain. Granted, the creators don’t have that many pages to work with but none of these stories were at all interesting.

I learned that there’s a city/province/river in Turkey called Batman. So that’s… something. I was thoroughly bored by this series of instantly forgettable Batman shorts - not a single standout worth reading!
