Batman: The Detective #1 Review (Tom Taylor, Andy Kubert)

A new terrorist group wearing white Batman cowls has appeared in merry old England, hijacking and killing innocents - Batman joins the new Knight and Squire to save the day!

Batman: The Detective #1 is an underwhelming first ish. The new baddies are sorta interesting though their motivations are laughably silly. (I've put the spoiler way down below if you want to see what I mean or not)

I like Andy Kubert’s art - he remains one of the great Batman artists. Batman’s got a fancy new outfit, wearing a long collared coat in lieu of his cape, big knee-high boots and... goggles… Tom Taylor slips in some humour when Batman meets Knight in the hospital and he informs her that he punched a ghost - because of course Batman can punch ghosts (and the ghost design is cool too)!

As a Brit, it’s nice to see Batman in the UK every now and then, as well as seeing the new Knight and Squire in action for the first time in yonks - these are rare outings and I appreciate them.

Hopefully the story either makes more sense or becomes more interesting (I fully expect to not have both) in future issues. Decent art and some nice aspects aside, Batman: The Detective #1 is a weak beginning to this limited series.

They’re killing all the people Batman’s saved over the years. So you’re being asked to believe that Batman has been keeping a database of everyone he’s saved - which is insane in itself when you think about the numbers, let alone what sort of purpose this database would serve beyond this storyline - but also that this group either has the same information or access to Batman’s. Think about how many times Batman’s saved Gotham City and countless other people around the world! So are they just going to kill millions and millions of people??
