Strange Adventures #2 Review (Tom King, Mitch Gerads)

Adam Strange has just published a bestselling memoir - but there are claims of lies contained within it. Lies that Adam claims not to know but is open to have investigated. Enter: Mister Terrific.

The second issue of Tom King’s Strange Adventures is much like the first: decent but not overly impressive. Not much happens - we already know Mister Terrific agreed to delve into Strange’s past so the preamble leading up to it is kinda superfluous to an extent, and the other story’s relevance is unclear so far and was mostly meh. It’s about Adam and his wife Alanna going on a rocket pack trip across the desert that doesn’t go well for either.

The only Mister Terrific book I’ve read is the godawful New 52 first volume so I was pleasantly surprised that I quite liked the character the way King writes him. It’s dark and serious but I feel like that’s the right approach given the stories King writes for DC - besides his excellent Batman, take Omega Men or Mister Miracle - that deal with weighty issues, in this case familial death, and a goofy tone would work against the subject matter.

You get a primer on Mister Terrific here: genius intellect, physical specimen, interesting gadgets, and why Batman approached him as the guy for this. And, if nothing else, you’ll learn some trivia you didn’t before (apparently Michael’s day-to-day life is a constant pub quiz)!

I’m not usually that smitten with Mitch Gerads but I thought his art for the Mister Terrific parts were astonishingly good - really skilfully detailed and cinematic. Evan Shaner’s art is colourful and poppy, as it normally is, and serves as a nice contrast - I love how effectively he uses empty space in his panels to focus the action as well as provide atmosphere.

Strange Adventures #2 isn’t an amazing comic but it’s an intriguing development of the first issue and definitely worth checking out for all five Mister Terrific fans out there. I’m slowly warming to the series and look forward to seeing where the story’s headed.
